The Blackhill Campaign (1964) |
This 52-minute documentary tells the story of a campaign by mineworkers in a village near Berwick-Upon-Tweed to prevent the closure of their pit in 1959, in the teeth of opposition both from the management and the union. It was the one and only film directed by a sociology academic and amateur film-maker, Jack Parsons. Despite having been widely shown at the time of its initial release, The Blackhill Campaign was thought to be lost until the NRFTA's curator managed to locate Mr. Parsons in May 2004. His print was deposited with the NRFTA, from which we carried out a full restoration. It was given a second 'premiere' at the Maltings Arts Centre in Berwick on 8 October 2004. The Blackhill Campaign is published on DVD by Mr. Parsons' publishing company, at £15 including P & P. The disc also includes a 48-minute interview with Mr. Parsons, shot in June 2004. Further information and an order form can be found on his website. |
