We do, of course, accept any deposits of film or videotape related to the northern region of England and which fall within our acquisition policy. However, we are actively looking for footage covering a number of specific aspects or events of the region's history, either because we have identified them as being especially important or in repsonse to access requests which we cannot fulfil. If you have, or know of, any footage relating to the subjects described on this page, we would be extremely grateful if you could contact us.
Yemeni Arab Community in South Shields, 1930s
We are looking for any moving image footage of the Yemeni community in South Shields, and especially relating to the riots in 1931. We are not aware of any surviving film. At that time home movie-making was a very expensive hobby and the arrival of sound had severely affected the production of regional newsreels, or 'local topicals', so it may well be that these events simply were not filmed.

Unidentified Documentary about Housing Conditions in Newcastle, c. mid-1930s
On 1 June 2002, an obituary appeared in the Daily Telegraph of Elizabeth Varley (née Montagu), which described her as 'an upper-class rebel who worked in films and intelligence, and showed Graham Greene the seedy side of Vienna.' It further states that between 1932 and 1935, 'she also took part in a film about the appalling housing conditions in Newcastle, aligning herself with socialism.' Do you know the title of this film, who else was involved in its production, or if any copies survive? The NRFTA has very little footage relating to working-class life in Newcastle during the 1930s, as home movie equipment was very expensive and thus only available to the relatively affluent. Due to the prevailing censorship climate at that time, commercially produced films (e.g. newsreels) tended to avoid discussing political or social issues, usually confining themselves to straight reporting (e.g. the surviving footage of the Jarrow marches). If this film still exists, therefore, it would be a unique record of life in Newcastle in the 1930s, and the NRFTA is thus very keen to locate it.

The Beginning of Newbiggin (c. 1946 - short film or possible newsreel item)
We have received an access enquiry from someone who recalls seeing a short film of this title at the Picture House in Newbiggin-by-the-Sea in 1946. He recalls that it included scenes of fishermen at Newbiggin. We do not hold a film with this title, and neither does the National Film and Television Archive or any of the private sector newsreel archives. The British Board of Film Classification has no record of any film with the word 'Newbiggin' in the title being certificated between 1940 and 1950 (which it would need to have been in order to be shown in a public cinema), suggesting that either the title is incorrect or it refers to a title card within a complete newsreel which has not been catalogued. Do you have any further information about what this film could be and where we might locate a surviving copy?

North Korean Football Team in Middlesbrough, 1966
In 1966 the North Korean football team came to Middlesbrough, where they played three matches at the Ayresome Park stadium (famously beating Italy 1-0 in their final match on 19 July). Their visit was extensively filmed by a North Korean documentary crew, and this footage has recently been used in a major television documentary. However, the North Korean government owns the copyright to all of this film, which would prevent us from providing access to it even if we had copies. Did you, or did anyone you know film the North Koreans on Teesside? If so and you would be prepared to consider depositing it with us, please get in touch.
