It is with great sadness that we say goodbye to Lisa Bond, our Newcastle-based access officer who has been with us since 1999. Due to funding issues we are not able to appoint a replacement immediately, with the result that there is now no permanent member of staff based at Newcastle. For the time being, please contact us at the Middlesbrough office in the first instance.

The NRFTA, in conjunction with the Tyneside Cinema, begins work on a project funded by the Museums, Libraries and Archives Council's 'Their Past, Your Future' scheme. This £25k project will fully restore and carry out contextualising research and oral history work on two of our most frequently shown films from World War II, Holidays at Home (1944) and V.E. Day (1945). These colour films document life on Tyneside during the final year of the war, and we hope to screen the restored versions and make them available on DVD by the end of the year.

Following a successful fundraising initiative last year, we have placed an order for two 'Flashscan' telecine machines - one for 8mm and Super 8mm film, the other for 9.5mm. This will be a major boost for our access work - at the moment, we hold approximately 3,000 elements in these film formats, most of which cannot be seen at all (and many of those which are accessible can only be seen in very low quality copies). Most of this material consists of home movies shot between the early 1930s and late 1970s. We are expecting delivery in June or July.

Agreement has been reached in principle for the transfer of regional film archive provision for Cumbria from the NRFTA to the North West Film Archive (NWFA). This issue has been on the table since 2001, when the UK Film Council's regional offices took over core funding for the regional film archives from those of the Arts Council. The old system recognised Cumbria as being part of a Northern Region, but the new one distinguishes between north-east and north-west. The problem is a complicated one for us, because the BBC collection includes both North-East and Cumbria related material, and the Border TV collection relates to Cumbria and Southern Scotland. We have now agreed the following plan of action with the NWFA:

  • The BBC collection will remain with us, and we will work with both the NWFA and the BBC to provide access within Cumbria as and when needed.
  • The Border collection will eventually transfer either to the NWFA or the Scottish Screen Archive.
  • Miscellaneous collections held by us and primarily of Cumbrian interest will be transferred to the NWFA on a case-by-case basis, with depositors being approached for their consent before any films are relocated.
  • The NWFA will assume responsibility for Cumbria-related acquisitions and primary responsibility for access provision in Cumbria forthwith, although we will still need to be involved with the latter in the case of BBC material or other material which has not yet been transferred.

As of today we have stopped supporting VHS as an access format, and will only be able to supply viewing copies on DVD. In the past year, requests for material on VHS videotapes have dwindled to around 10% of our total production of viewing copies. We have therefore decided that it is no longer cost effective for us to continue to provide access on this format. We will still, of course, accept material originated on VHS for preservation.

The NRFTA acquires a Mk. II Rank Cintel telecine machine. Once we have repaired and commissioned it, this equipment will enable us to produce broadcast-standard video copies from 16mm and 35mm film originals, and will greatly increase the quality of access we are able to offer both private and professional users. Grateful thanks are due to the National Motor Museum, which donated the machine to use (they had no space for it after upgrading).
