Introduction

Apart from research viewings on our premises and the sale of some material on DVD, there are three ways in which we provide public access to the collection.

Film Shows

In addition to research viewing and the provision of footage for commercial producers, the NRFTA organises regular screenings of material from its collection in cinemas, arts centres and other venues around the region. These usually take the form of a collection of shorter pieces or edited excerpts, selected with the location and audience in mind. These are usually shown using digital video (though if a venue has 16mm or 35mm projection facilities, we can often bring some material on film) and introduced by a speaker. We will discuss the technical arrangements with you well before the date, but as a bare minimum we need you to provide a room with blackout facilities, a screen and a power supply. In the long-term we hope to produce a number of touring packages on 35mm and digital video and with perpetually cleared screening rights, which will be available 'off the shelf' to venues. In the meantime, if you are interested in exploring the possibility of an NRFTA film show at your venue, please contact us in the first instance. Our charges for providing film shows at your venue are as follows:

  • Shows hosted by non-profit organisations, open to the organisation's members only, and for which no admission charge is made: A flat fee of £50, all inclusive.
  • Shows hosted by non-profit organisations, open to the public, and for which no admission charge is made: The show fee of £50, plus the speaker's travel expenses in getting to and from your venue (charged at the rate of 39p per mile from the NRFTA's Middlesbrough office), up to a maximum of £100 in total (fee plus expenses).
  • Shows hosted by non-profit organisations, for which an admission charge is made (whether open to the public or not): A flat fee of £100.
  • Shows hosted by for-profit organisations: 35% of the box-office receipts or a flat fee of £250, whichever is higher.

If the event is to be open to the public, it is a legal requirement that all the material to be shown must either be certificated by the British Board of Film Classification, or cleared for screening in advance by your local authority. This does not apply to closed screenings, e.g. where only members of a local history society or students of a college are admitted. Given sufficient notice, we can supply the material to be shown to either the BBFC or your local authority for examination, but organising and paying for this is your responsibility.
